Character: Lina Inverse
Series/Fandom: The Slayers
Age: 17
Birthday: July 17
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Sexuality: Heterosexual, but possibly open to new experiences
Appearance: Lina fancies herself to be a raving beauty, but the truth is that she is at best cute rather than beautiful. She is rather short for her age, with a petite figure and small breasts, and that plus her round face and wide ruby eyes make people think that she is much younger than she actually is. Lina has long, somewhat untidy red hair, which she holds back from her face with a black headband. Her usual outfit consists of a short-sleeved dark pink shirt with a ribbon of white on the hems, with an added yellow band over her breasts. Most of her arms are covered by long pale violet gloves. Her tight-fitting pants are the same dark pink as her shirt. Protecting her back and shoulders is a long black crimson-lined cloak with armored plates at the shoulders. The shoulder armor is trimmed in gold and ornamented with spherical red jewels, as is the clasp holding it shut at her throat. She wears a belt of similar design slung low at her hips. She wears knee-high boots of the same pale violet as her gloves. Topping off the ensemble is a pair of gold circular earrings, and a pair of jeweled cuffs called the Demon's Blood Talismans at her wrists. Most of the "ornaments" that she wears are actually enchanted with various spells that protect her and enhance her powers.
Personality: A good word for Lina would be "explosive". She has a hair-trigger temper (don't EVER make mention of her breast size if you value your life) and she has no reserves about letting fly with all manner of physical and magical violence if you get on her bad side. If you don't get on her bad side, though, she can be a good companion - she doesn't believe in letting life get her down, and works hard to maintain a bright and perky demeanor even when things are getting grim. Even though she has her softer moments, she doesn't like to let people see her cry, feeling that it only drags everyone else down and makes the team less effective. Lina is full of self-confidence, considering herself a "beautiful sorcery genius". She believes she can do just about anything, and she's probably right. She fights for truth, justice, and all that other happy stuff, but only when she feels like it. Even though she loves her friends deep down and will do a whole heck of a lot to help them if they're in a tight pinch, her primary motivations are the acquisition of food, money (which can be used to buy food), and magic (which can be used to acquire money to buy food). For such a small girl, she can eat a lot and never seems to gain a pound, probably because of the amount of energy it takes to cast the spells to earn the money to buy the food...
Weapons: Lina's been known to carry a shortsword and can hold her own in a fight with it, but by and large she tends to stick to spellcasting for most things and let her companions handle the sword-slinging.
Abilities: Magic. Lina is possibly the most powerful user of Black Magic in her world - possibly the most powerful magic user alive, period, if one is reckoning "power" as being "the amount of stuff she can explode at one go". While she can use some White and Shamanic magic, Black is her specialty. The spell considered to be the pinnacle of Black Magic skill, Dragon Slave, comes so easily to her that she doesn't even have to complete the incantation anymore (reciting the first couple of lines and adding, "etc., etc.," seems to work just fine). Beyond that, she has also developed an advanced version of the Dragon Slave called the Giga Slave, which taps directly into the power of the Lord of Nightmares, and could potentially be used to destroy everything in the universe. Needless to say she doesn't use this spell anymore, instead opting to use a more refined version called the Laguna Blade, which focuses all that cosmic power into a manageable space. However, even that is incredibly draining for her, and she can't cast it more than once every few days without doing herself serious damage. Basically her skill lies in blowing things up in spectacular fashion, but she can manage a bit of healing if she needs to, as well as a few varieties of elemental magic and miscellaneous other small spells.
Weaknesses: She's terrified of her big sister. No, really, she is - mention Luna and she'll head for the hills. She's also afraid of slugs. Aside from that, her weaknesses for money and food are easily exploited. As mentioned before, she has a hair-trigger temper and tends to blow minor insults out of proportion, often resulting in a fair bit of property damage and bodily harm to the people who annoyed her, or innocent bystanders. To say she is prone to overkill is something of an understatement: she's been known to demolish an entire town while attempting to slay a single monster. She's prone to bouts of selfishness and jealousy - she may be a hero, but often she's a reluctant one. Most of the time Lina looks out for what's best for Lina. It's not often she'll go out of her way to help someone just because it's the right thing to do. If the job needs getting done, she doesn't mind putting her friends in the line of fire if that's what it will take. Additionally, during her "time of month", her magical powers all but vanish entirely for about three days, leaving her vulnerable.
History: Lina grew up in the small town of Zefielia as the youngest of two sisters. Her parents were merchants, and Lina grew up with a sound idea of the value of a dollar, and what a girl needed to do to make a few. Both girls studied magic and were quite talented at it. (As a side note, Lina's official title is Lina the Pink. All officially registered members of the Mages' Guild are assigned colors, which have no bearing on their level of skill or specialty - it's just a handy way of identifying them. The registrar decided that since Lina was a girl, she'd like being Pink. She never uses her title.) Times being tight in Zefielia, the two girls decided they needed to do something to earn a bit of cash. Luna took a job working part-time as a waitress. Lina... used her magic to create illusory images of her (totally stacked) big sister bathing. It worked pretty well for earning money, but not so well with keeping peace in the family. Shortly after this incident, Lina realized the value of getting out and seeing the world, so she left Zefielia, never to return.
On her early journies, Lina traveled with an annoyance-slash-friend called Naga the Serpent, known mainly for her irritating laugh and enormous hooters. The two of them had several adventures together, and Lina firmly established her reputation as a woman with whom you do not mess. Actually, the reputation she got was, "The girl so scary that even dragons are freaked out by her." It's even stupider to call her "Dragon Spooker" than it is to call her "Lina the Pink". Eventually the two of them parted ways, and Lina began a solo act for a while, but it turns out that Lina's not the sort who can go it alone for long.
Traveling around the countryside, picking up cash by robbing bandits (it's not really stealing if it's taking from thieves!), Lina made the fateful mistake of liberating an odd little statue. Suddenly, everyone was on her case, including a man wrapped in bandages called Zolf, an army of trolls, and a mysterious chimera called Zelgadiss. On the other side, offering to aid her, was the famous Red Priest Rezo! Not to mention the fact that protecting her from all this chaos was a handsome (if rather dense) swordsman named Gourry. The two of them managed to keep each other alive long enough to learn that Zelgadiss and his follower Zolf weren't as bad as they first appeared, and that the real threat was in fact Rezo. He desired the statue because it contained a piece of the Philosopher's Stone, the column on which the entire world rests. It was his hope that using the Stone, he would be able to heal his eyes, which had been sealed shut from his birth. The reason for this turned out to be because a fragment of the demon Ruby-Eye Shabranigudo was sealed inside him, and opening his eyes freed the demon, resulting in Rezo's death and a strenuous battle for Lina and her friends. Two of Zelgadiss's friends died in the ensuing chaos, but Lina was eventually able to destroy the fragment using the Giga Slave. After that point, the group split up for a while, with Lina and Gourry going one way and Zelgadiss going the other.
However, life didn't stay peaceful for long. As it turned out, Rezo had a beautiful assistant and lover named Eris, who was a wee bit peeved that her boyfriend was dead, and intended to do something about it. She sent her minions forth to find Lina and her friends and kill them as retribution for Rezo's death. Lina, Gourry, and later Zelgadiss and a new friend, the Princess Amelia, were able to survive everything she threw at them. Then she cooked up something bigger: a Copy Rezo, a clone meant to do what his original counterpart couldn't. Copy Rezo didn't take kindly to being cloned and killed Eris, and then went on a rampage. The final showdown took place in the city of Sairaag, where Lina and her gang, aided by a white sorceress named Sylphiel, were finally able to defeat him, though the entire town of Sairaag was wiped out in the process. Afterwards, the group split up again to follow their own paths.
Lina's path brought her and her loyal bodyguard to the city of Zoana, searching for a legendary book called the Claire Bible, which supposedly contained the thoughts of the Water Dragon (a god in her world) which were recorded when it died. Such an artifact would give a person tremendous power, and Lina's all about acquiring tremendous power. She was surprised to arrive in Xoana and find Zelgadiss there, working as a guard and hoping to catch a glimpse of the Claire Bible and thereby finding out how to turn himself back into a human, and Amelia, who was there as an ambassador of peace to the warlike King of Zoana. Of course, nothing ever stays calm in Lina's world, and what was meant to be a peaceful visit turned into a battle, complete with a magically-powered giant robot. By the end of it, Zoana was in ruins, the royals were furious, and it turned out the book wasn't the Claire Bible after all. So away they all went again, looking for more leads to the location of the Claire Bible.
Their search brought them to a cheerful, smiling man called Xelloss, who was more than happy to offer hints as to where the Claire Bible was. Thus begins a mad wild goose chase all over the countryside. As it turned out, several of the local demons had a stake in Lina's quest, and they're more than happy to interfere with her life. Or death. Whichever was more convenient. See, Lina knew this awesome spell called the Giga Slave, which called directly on the power of the Lord of Nightmares, the dark and chaotic Mother of All Things. Correctly (or incorrectly, depending on your perspective) cast, the Giga Slave could invoke the Lord of Nightmares' full power and wipe out everything in existence. One of the five greater demons, Hellmaster Phibrizo, wanted an up close demonstration of this spell for an experiment of his - as far as he was concerned, killing everything could only be beneficial to him. Other demons didn't care for this idea so much, and were determined to stop him, which might be good except that the easiest way to stop Lina from casting the Giga Slave is to get rid of Lina. A particularly clever Mazoku even managed to temporarily cut off Lina's magical power, but the joke was on the villains: this setback led to Lina acquiring the Demon's Blood Talismans, making her more powerful (and destructive) than ever. Of course, Lina didn't care so much for the idea of destroying the universe either, but the Hellmaster ensured her cooperation by kidnapping Gourry to lure her into his lair. Once he had her in his grip, he killed off her friends one by one, until at last, with all of them gone and nothing stopping Lina from unleashing her full power, she cast the Giga Slave. What Phibrizo wasn't counting on was that the Giga Slave wouldn't just bring about the end of existence, it would summon the Lord of Nightmares herself, and she was ticked off at him meddling with her universe. The Lord of Nightmares destroyed Phibrizo and set everything back the way it should be. With a happy ending secured, the group was once again free to scatter in all directions.
Maybe they would meet up again someday - in fact, it seems like a pretty sure thing. Unfortunately, they won't see Lina again until she gets out of Econtra.
